One teacher and five officials and employees of Chittagong University suspended
The authorities have temporarily suspended a teacher, an official and four employees of Chittagong University on charges of disciplinary violations. The decision was taken at the university’s 559th syndicate meeting last Friday. However, the matter was not made public due to the holiday. Acting Registrar of the university, Professor Mohammad Saiful Islam, confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo on Sunday afternoon. However, the letter of suspension has not been issued yet.

The temporarily suspended teacher is Assistant Professor Saiful Islam Sarkar of the Department of Oceanography. He is a member of the Awami League’s Central Agriculture and Cooperatives Committee. There were multiple allegations of misconduct against him, including taking a stand against students in the mass uprising. The suspended official is Golam Kibria. He was the deputy registrar and head of the security department of the university. He is accused of taking money by promising to give work to a contractor. In addition, Tanvir Ahmed, a low-level assistant in the accounting department, Sayan Dasgupta, a low-level assistant in the sports science department, Parvez Hasan, a low-level assistant in the teachers’ personal records section, and Mahfuzur Rahman, a high-level assistant in the accounting department, have also been temporarily suspended.
When asked, the university’s acting registrar, Saiful Islam, told Prothom Alo, “An investigation committee was formed against those who created panic in the registrar’s office last year, locked the registrar’s office, and misbehaved. After the recommendation of that investigation committee, they were temporarily suspended at the syndicate meeting.”
Regarding teacher Saidul Islam Sarkar, the acting registrar said that there are multiple allegations against him as well. An investigation committee has also been formed in these incidents. The order of dismissal will be finalized once the investigation committee submits its report. And Golam Kibria’s allegations have already been proven. Even then, a committee has been formed to implement the punishment.
Teacher Saidul Islam Sarkar was contacted by mobile phone several times to seek comment on this matter, but he did not answer the phone.
